mwcqPṛthvīcite-ref-1[N 1] (mwdgin sanscrito mwdwपृथ्वी) o mweaPṛthivī (mweqin sanscrito mwegपृथिवी) o ancora mwewPṛthvī mātā è una divinità mwfavedica che rappresenta la mwfqterra. È adorata anche nell'mwfginduismo e nel mwfwbuddhismo. In mwgasanscrito il suo nome significa mwgqterra.

Nei testi induisti

Nei mwhqmwhgVeda, è la consorte di mwhwDyauṣ Pitā, il cielo, e madre di mwiaAgni, mwiqUṣás e mwigIndra (anche se quest'ultimo è anche indicato come uno degli mwiwĀditya, ovvero figli di mwjaAditī). Come mwjqPṛthvī Mātā (madre terra) è complementare a Dyaus Pita (padre cielo).cite-ref-2[1] Nel mwkgmwkwṚgveda, Cielo e terra sono riferiti con la forma duale mwlaDyavapṛthivi.cite-ref-3[2]

Nei successivi mwmgmwmwPurāṇa, è conosciuta come mwnaBhūmi ed è la consorte di mwnqVarāha.

Nel buddhismo

Nei testi buddisti e nelle rappresentazioni artistiche, Pṛthvī è descritta sia come protettrice di mwoaGautama Buddha, sia come testimone della sua illuminazione. Prithvi appare nel primo buddismo nel mwoqCanone Pali, scacciando la figura della tentatrice mwogMāra e attestando la dignità di Gautama Buddha di raggiungere l'illuminazione.cite-ref-4[3] Il Buddha è spesso raffigurato mentre esegue il mwpwbhūmisparśa o mwqamudrā ("che tocca la terra") come invocazione simbolica della dea.

Nel buddismo cinese, è considerata una delle ventiquattro divinità protettive (二十四諸天, mwqgÈrshísì zhūtiān) e di solito è custodita nella sala Mahavira dei templi buddisti insieme agli altri mwqwdeva.
